Taber Abrasion testing determines the resistance of organic coatings to abrasion produced by the Taber Abraser on coatings applied to metal panels.
Taber Abrasion Testing
During a Taber Abrasion Test, the coating is applied at a uniform thickness on the test panels and after curing, the surface is abraded by rotating the panel under weighted abrasive wheels. The load on the wheels can be adjusted to 250 g, 500 g or 1000 g. Each specimen is abraded using a rotary rubbing action under controlled conditions of pressure and abrasive action. The test specimen, mounted on a turntable platform, turns on a vertical axis against the sliding rotation of two abrading wheels. One abrading wheel rubs the specimen outward toward the periphery and the other inward toward the center. Specimens are abraded repeatedly for a set number of rotational cycles, typically 500, 1000 or 5000 cycles. Abrasion (wear) resistance is calculated as loss in weight at a specified number of abrasion cycles (loss in weight per cycle) or as number of cycles required to remove a unit amount of coating thickness.
