Mandrel Bend Test
The Mandrel Bend test is used to evaluate a coating's resistance to cracking upon bending.
This test method qualifies the coating’s resistance to cracking after applied to, and cured on sheet metal. Fully cured coated panels are bent over a conical or cylindrical mandrel to test the coating for resistance to cracking, colour change, and adhesion.
Coatings on panels are elongated when bent during manufacturer or service. If the coating/curing process was inadequate this elongation can lead to cracking causing problems including premature corrosion of the panel substrate.
Corresponding results, produced by decreasing mandrel sizes, indicate the degree of elasticity of the coating.
