Salt Spray

The Salt Fog (Salt Spray) test is an accelerated corrosion test and a standard in the industry examining the resistance of a coating to a high humidity and high salt content environment.

This test is particularly valuable for examining coatings that are going to be used in marine applications where there is salt water. This test is a standardized test method, as such the data from this test is useful for comparative purposes. Salt spray test produces a corrosive attack to the coated samples in order to predict its suitability in use as a protective finish. The appearance of corrosion products (oxides) is evaluated after a period of time and the more corrosion resistant the coating is, the longer the period in testing without showing signs of corrosion. Many regulatory bodies and some companies require coatings be put through standard salt spray testing.

Sample Requirements:

Coated panels, typically 3” x 6” (75 mm x 150 mm) or externally coated pipe sections

Test Capabilities:

Pressure: up to 20 psi
Temperature: conforms to industry standards
pH: 4 – 10
